Grandma Eleanor was my best friend. She'd let me stay up past bedtime reading adventure books and sneaking cookies. She taught me chess when I was six and let me win until I was eight — then she started playing for real and I didn't beat her until I was sixteen. She was sharp, funny, warm, and endlessly patient. I'll carry her lessons with me always.
